Last night we saw Art School Confidential for free. I'm glad we saw it for free. As a movie, it was so-so, but I did find it hilarious! I think that since I was an art school student and I work at an art school and I know about the art world, I might have found it much funnier than most. I do want to see it again (probably on DVD) but again, mostly for the humor and not the quality of film making.
After we saw the film, we took THE NEW YORK EXPERIENCE train ride. First, we'd been talking about the bad back lot NYC that the movie had (not as bad as the movie Rent's bad nyc set), so when we got on the most stereotypical train ever, it ended the night perfectly. At one end of the train we had the crazy homeless man. He was talking loudly in Spanish and moving all about, kneeling and worshiping his bookbag at one point. It was one of those rare un-airconditioned cars too, so his smell was the train's smell. The motions he was making and the speed he was speaking made it look like he was directing a film.
Close to him was the group of effeminate gay boys. College guys that were catty and fashionable. Then next to us was the loud, ghetto, ebonic speaking, fake Louis-Vouton carrying black ladies. They were loud and obnoxious. There was also the makeout couple and other 'normal' New Yorkers. My favorite though was sitting across from me. He was an F-to-M tranny that hadn't had top surgery yet. That's okay though because he was chubby so it worked. The thing that was ruining his image though was that he had perfectly waxed eyebrows. He'd grown a goatee, so why was he still waxing the brows?
It was a fun night.

Even F to M trannies don't want to look like Bert from Sesame Street! C'mon!
i saw it for free last night--yes, good thing it was for free. i didnt even realize it was set in ny for awhile. ha.
but--there were funny art school jokes. but the audience was a little too enthusiastic. oh well.
Regarding ASC's director, Terry Zwigoff:
CRUMB is still one of my favorite documentaries. This was TZ's first movie, right? I once heard some crazy rumor that Terry Zwigoff threatened to kill himself during the filming. Could that be true?
I anticipated & liked GHOST WORLD. Wha happened to the actress who played Enid? What's her name? Thora Birch? What happened to her?
I can't put my finger on why I'm not so excited to see Art School Confidential. Nevermind. I want to see it.
Terry's first film was Louie Bluie (which I've never seen) and is a documentary that I hear is as good as Crumb. It's about a Blue's Musician and the music. It was done almost 10 years before crumb. I liked Crumb a lot because it gave me the same uncomfortable feeling that Crumb's comics give me. And Ghost World was A-OK. I didn't see Bad Santa.
I think Ms. Birch still does indie films and I bet the wife has seen her on the train. (I read an article this morning about how thanks to new options of publishing "Indie Novels" are about to become what "Indie Music" and "Indie Films" are.)
And to answer your question from the other day, I did nothing to provoke being screamed at by my boss.
