Oppose something

During last night's theory class we discussed oppositional cultures such as mods, hippies, and punks. During their time, they were quite oppositional to mass-culture of the day, though now they have been controlled by mass culture and turned into fashion. There's a popular idea that there is no oppositional culture anymore, or that you have to look at things on a smaller scale to see oppositional cultures in play. Example: I no longer wear my lip ring because I like my teeth just the way they are. No one here cares if it's in or out, and the only reason I wore it in the first place was because I liked the way it looked. But anytime I'm in Tennessee I will wear the lip ring because I like the way it makes me opposing to some of my family. Kissing my grandmothers on the cheek with it is a hoot and hearing my cousin talk about how he'd like to beat up all the idiots with piercings is amusing. Body Modification as a culture is no longer oppositional in most of the world, but is in certain places.

The only culture that came up in class as an oppositional culture to the hegemony is The Politically Left-Leaning Christian. This group opposes the majority of Christians in the US and the majority of Liberals as well. I'd say the lefty christian is a vast thing ranging from the socially conscious believer to the tranny in her sunday best at her Gay Friendly church on Sunday morning. I think I want to study this "group" closer, as perhaps this is me... but do I really stand up and actively oppose things?

I voted today.
you should too

Get in where you fit in. Then get disowned.

I don't remember any of our immediate friends caring about whether or not you wore your lip ring - except one. I remember Ben asking you how you got "that fishin' lure" stuck in your mouth :) How the heck did we even end up at Prestons with Ben?! Wasn't it just me you and him?
